Vietnam or Bali? An Honest Comparison for European Travellers

Vietnam or Bali? An Honest Comparison for European Travellers

02 October 2026 7 min read Eurasia DMC Travel Team

Culture and food or temples and villas? We compare Vietnam and Bali on weather, flight time from Europe, budget, beaches, honeymoons and family travel — and explain when to combine both.

Short answer: Choose Vietnam if you want a journey — varied landscapes, cities, history and the best food in South-East Asia. Choose Bali if you want to stay in one or two beautiful places, enjoy villas, spas, temples and beaches, and travel less. For a European summer holiday Bali has the better weather overall; for November–March both work, with Vietnam's south and centre at their best.

Vietnam and Bali are the two destinations European travellers ask us to compare most often. Both are about the same distance from Europe, both offer superb value, and both are stunning. But they deliver very different holidays. After planning trips to both for guests from Germany, France, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and the UK, here is our honest side-by-side view.

Getting there from Europe

Vietnam has an advantage here. Vietnam Airlines flies non-stop from several European hubs to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and one-stop connections via the Gulf, Istanbul or Singapore are widely available. Bali has no non-stop flights from Europe, so you always connect — commonly via Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. Total travel time to Bali is typically two to four hours longer.

Weather: when to go where

Bali has a simple climate: a dry season from April to October and a wet season from November to March. That makes Bali a natural choice for European summer holidays. Vietnam is more complex because of its length: the north is best in spring and autumn, the centre from February to August, and the south from December to April. The result: Vietnam has good weather somewhere all year round, but you must choose the right region. See our Vietnam weather guide.

Bali's temples are part of everyday life — you will see offerings on every doorstep.

Culture and sightseeing

Vietnam offers a richer sightseeing programme: a thousand-year-old capital, imperial Hue, UNESCO-listed Hoi An, the war history of the south and the ethnic minority cultures of the mountains. Bali's strength is its living Hindu culture — temple ceremonies, dance performances, offerings and craft villages around Ubud. It is less about "seeing sights" and more about soaking up an atmosphere.

Beaches and islands

Bali wins for variety: surf beaches in Uluwatu and Canggu, calm water in Nusa Dua and Sanur, and the dramatic cliffs of Nusa Penida. Vietnam has excellent beaches too — Phu Quoc's sunsets, the long sandy bay of Da Nang and the quiet coves of Quy Nhon — but beach time is usually the final chapter of a longer journey rather than the focus.

Food

Many of our guests say Vietnamese food is the best they have eaten anywhere. It is fresh, varied and regional, and street food is a central part of the experience. Balinese and Indonesian food — nasi goreng, satay, babi guling, sambal — is delicious, and Bali has an excellent international and healthy-food scene, especially in Ubud and Canggu, ideal for vegans and vegetarians.

Honeymoons

Bali is the classic honeymoon choice: private pool villas, couples' spa rituals, floating breakfasts and sunset dinners on the cliffs. Vietnam is a wonderful honeymoon for couples who want adventure first and romance later — a cruise among the karsts, lantern-lit evenings in Hoi An, and then a beach villa on Phu Quoc. Read our Bali honeymoon guide for ideas.

Families

Bali is easy with young children: fewer internal moves, many family villas with private pools and a relaxed pace. Vietnam suits families with children of about six and over who enjoy boats, caves, bicycles and new food. Both are safe and welcoming.

Budget

Both are very good value compared with Europe. Hotels and villas in Bali are particularly good value at the luxury end. In Vietnam, transport, guides and food are cheaper, but there are more internal flights. Overall, the cost for two weeks is similar. Our Vietnam cost guide has a full breakdown.

Can I combine Vietnam and Bali in one trip?

Yes. There are no direct flights between Vietnam and Bali, but connections via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur take around six to eight hours. We recommend at least three weeks for both: ten to twelve days in Vietnam followed by a week of rest in Bali. It works especially well from April to May or in September, when both have good weather.

Our verdict

  • First trip to Asia and you want to discover: Vietnam.
  • You want to rest, recharge and enjoy villas and spas: Bali.
  • Summer holiday (July–August): Bali, or central Vietnam.
  • Christmas or February escape: southern and central Vietnam.
  • Honeymoon: Bali for pure romance, Vietnam + Phu Quoc for adventure and romance.

Overtourism and responsible choices

Both destinations face pressure in their most famous places: parts of south Bali and the Ha Long Bay main routes can be crowded in peak season. You can travel more responsibly — and enjoy more — by choosing quieter alternatives: Lan Ha instead of the busiest Ha Long routes, Sidemen or Munduk instead of only Canggu, Quy Nhon instead of only Da Nang. Visiting outside July–August and Christmas also helps, and your money goes further.

Language and getting around

English is widely spoken in tourist areas of Bali, where tourism has been the main industry for decades. In Vietnam, English is common in hotels, restaurants and among younger people in cities, but less so in rural areas — a guide makes a big difference. In Bali you will mostly use private drivers, as distances are short but traffic is slow; in Vietnam you will use domestic flights for longer distances and private cars for shorter transfers.

Safety and health

Both destinations are considered safe for European travellers. The main risks are traffic (especially on scooters), sun and heat, and stomach upsets. In Bali, strong currents on some west-coast beaches require care. In Vietnam, typhoons can affect the central and northern coast from August to November. Neither requires mandatory vaccinations for travellers from Europe, but visit a travel clinic before departure for personal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bali or Vietnam cheaper?

Day-to-day costs are slightly lower in Vietnam; luxury villas are better value in Bali. Over two weeks, the total is usually similar.

Which is better for a first trip to Asia?

Vietnam offers more variety and history, while Bali is more relaxing. Both are easy for first-timers.

Which has better beaches?

Bali and its surrounding islands generally have more varied beaches; Vietnam's best beaches are on Phu Quoc and the central coast.

Which is better for a summer holiday from Europe?

Bali, because July and August are in its dry season. In Vietnam, focus on the central coast at that time of year.

Can I visit both in two weeks?

It is possible but rushed. With two weeks we suggest one destination; with three weeks, both work well.
