Leave the town of Sapa on foot with a local Hmong guide and descend into the Muong Hoa valley, where rice terraces step down the hillsides like giant staircases. Walk through Lao Chai and Ta Van villages, stopping to meet families and learn about indigo dyeing and daily farm life.
Spend the night in a traditional homestay with mattress, mosquito net and hot shower, sharing dinner (and, if you like, a glass of rice wine) with your hosts. Day two continues through bamboo forest and waterfalls before a vehicle drives you back to Sapa. About 12 km on day one and 8 km on day two, moderate.
